"FROM VARANGIANS TO GREEKS": TWO CAPITALS AND NOVGOROD THE GREAT 14 days
Our fourteen-day tour combines a visit to the two main cities of Russia Moscow and St.Petersburg with a unique opportunity to explore Novgorod the Great, the oldest Russian city founded in 862 and famous for the Sofia Cathedral, Kremlin and the museum of wooden architecture which displays traditional rural homes in an open-air setting. Moscow, founded in 1147, is the political and financial capital of modern Russia famous for Red Square with the unique onion domes of St.Basil’s Cathedral, the magnificent walls of the Kremlin and the fabulous Armoury Museum. St.Petersburg, founded in 1703, is the cultural capital of Russia, home to one of the largest concentrations of man-made attractions worldwide famous for the extravagant Imperial palaces, the stunning Hermitage Museum and splendid cathedrals.
DAY 1 - MOSCOW Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
DAY 2 - MOSCOW Morning guided city sightseeing tour including Tverskaya Street, panoramic views of the Kremlin, observation platform on Sparrow Hills and other famous sights. Afternoon visit to Christ the Saviour’s Cathedral followed by a walking tour of Red Square where you will see St.Basil’s Cathedral, Lenin’s Mausoleum and the GUM department store.
DAY 3 - MOSCOW Morning walking guided tour of the Kremlin grounds and the Armoury Museum, housing the treasures of the Russian tsars including Faberge jewellery. Afternoon at leisure for independent shopping in Arbat Street. Optional evening performance at the Moscow circus.
DAY 4 - MOSCOW Full day excursion to Sergiev Posad, one of Russia’s most important religious and historical landmarks and a place of spiritual pilgrimage. Dinner in a local restaurant.
DAY 5 - MOSCOW - NOVGOROD Morning departure for Novgorod by coach. Lunch en route. Upon arrival, dinner in the hotel and overnight.
DAY 6 - NOVGOROD Morning guided city sightseeing tour including visits to the Kremlin, the Sofia Cathedral and the museum of wooden architecture. Afternoon at leisure.
DAY 7 - NOVGOROD - ST PETERSBURG Morning departure for St.Petersburg by coach. Lunch in the hotel.Evening at leisure.
DAY 8 - ST PETERSBURG Morning guided city sightseeing tour including Nevsky Prospect, the Square of Fine Arts, Peter and Paul Fortress, St.Isaac’s Square and other famous sights. Afternoon guided tour of St.Isaac’s Cathedral and Our Saviour’s Church on the Spilt Blood, both famous for their opulent interior decoration and mosaics.
DAY 9 - ST PETERSBURG Morning guided tour of the Hermitage, one of the world’s largest art museums. Afternoon free for individual activities. Optional evening ballet performance or folklore show.
DAY 10 - ST PETERSBURG Morning excursion to Tsar’s Village (the town of Pushkin) with a guided visit to Catherine’s Palace where you will see the 8th wonder of the world, the Amber Room. Typical Russian lunch at the Podvorje Restaurant. Afternoon visit to Paul’s Palace (the town of Pavlovsk), an elegant Neoclassical palace of the Russian Royal family.
DAY 11 - ST PETERSBURG Morning guided tour of Yusupov Palace, one of the most charming private palaces in Europe, where Rasputin was murdered. Afternoon at leisure for independent sightseeing and shopping. Optional evening ballet performance or folklore show.
DAY 12 - ST PETERSBURG Morning excursion to Peterhof with a guided tour the Royal Bath House and Kitchen and the Lower Park. Afternoon excursion to Oranienbaum with a guided tour of the Chinese Palace of Catherine the Great.
DAY 13 - ST PETERSBURG Morning boat ride along rivers and canals (available May-September). Afternoon at leisure for independent sightseeing and shopping. Farewell dinner in a local restaurant.
DAY 14 - ST PETERSBURG Transfer to the airport.
