RUSSIAN CULTURAL STUDIES PROGRAMME IN ST.PETERSBURG 10 days
The itinerary below presents one of the programmes designed for students of Russian studies or History. It is meant to give an idea of an educational tour to St.Petersburg. We can adjust it according to the courses offered in your school and extend it to include Moscow , the Golden Ring cities, and other destinations.
DAY 1 ST PETERSBURG Upon arrival, transfer to the hotel and check in. Welcome dinner in a local restaurant.
DAY 2 ST PETERSBURG Morning guided city sightseeing tour during which you will see Palace Square , Nevsky Prospekt, Decembrists’s Square, the Bronze Horseman, with a guided visit to the Cabin of Peter the Great and Peter and Paul Fortress . Afternoon guided tour of St.Isaac’s Cathedral , famous for its opulent interior decoration and mosaics. Lecture “Russia Today” followed by a panel talk.
DAY 3 ST PETERSBURG Morning guided visit to Piskarev Memorial Cemetery , the largest in the world cemetery of the victims of World War II, where more than 500,000 people are buried in mass graves. Afternoon guided tour of the Museum of Leningrad Defence , which contains a rich collection of original documents and possessions of townspeople and soldiers and gives you a deep insight into the most tragic period in the history of St.Petersburg. Evening at Mariinsky Opera and Ballet Theatre.
DAY 4 ST PETERSBURG Morning excursion to Tsar’s Village (the town of Pushkin ) with a guided visit to Catherine’s Palace where you will see the 8 th wonder of the world, the Amber Room . Afternoon guided visit to Liceum, the Alma Mater of Alexandre Pushkin. Evening concert in the Capella Concert Hall.
DAY 5 NOVGOROD THE GREAT Early morning departure for the city of Novgorod the Great , the oldest Russian city dating back to the 9th century, exceptionally rich in art treasures and historic monuments. Upon arrival a walking guided city tour including visits to the Kremlin and the Sofia Cathedral of the 11th century . Lunch in a local restaurant. Afternoon visit to the Museum of Wooden Architecture with the typical North Russian wooden houses and churches of the 19th century. Evening departure for St.Petersburg.
DAY 6 ST PETERSBURG Attending a morning service at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Kazan, the main cathedral of the Russian Orthodox Church in St.Petersburg, followed by a guided tour of the Hermitage , one the world’s largest art museums. Evening performance at the Circus.
DAY 7 ST PETERSBURG Morning guided tour of the Russian Museum , possessing the world largest collection of Russian art. Afternoon guided visit to Dostoevsky apartment-museum and a walking tour the footsteps of “Crime and Punishment” main characters. Late afternoon meeting with Russian college students.
DAY 8 VALAAM ARCHIPELAGO Early in the morning you will depart to the islands of Valaam Archipelago by hydrofoil. En route you will see the picturesque banks of the Neva river and Lake Ladoga , the largest fresh-water lake in Europe . Valaam Archipelago is famous for the Russian Orthodox Monastery which has been functioning there since the 10th century. Upon arrival one of the novices will take you around the main grounds of the cloister and to its main cathedral. In the afternoon you will visit the sketes (hermitages) of St.John the Precursor and Gethsemane followed by a walk up the Mount of Olives .
DAY 9 ST PETERSBURG Morning guided tour of Yusupoff Palace with a visit to the rooms where Gregoriy Rasputin was assassinated. Farewell dinner in a local restaurant.
DAY 10 ST PETERSBURG Transfer to the airport
