ALTAI, THE FAIRY-TALE LAND OF SIBERIAN DEER
Altai is the mysterious wild land of about twenty thousand 'blue lakes' and tall mountains in snowcaps, sparkling rivers and waterfalls. Being unique for its flora and fauna, it is the only place in the world where you can see Siberian deer, which has been the symbol of longevity, health and manhood from the times immemorial. The extracts from young stags' antlers or pantas are used for medicinal purposes as they have a positive effect upon the immune, cardiovascular, and reproductive systems. The local spa hotel offers baths and Jacuzzi with these extracts and panta-saunas in Siberian pine barrels, the latter for men only. The only place in the world where you can have such a sauna is Altai!
Teletskoe Lake, one of the main attractions of Altai, also known under the nickname of 'Gold Lake' or 'Diamond Mace', is the second largest freshwater lake in the world after Lake Baikal. There you can see the wild taiga and the stone bay, have a unique experience of Russian 'banya' (bath) and open-air entertainments near the bonfire on the lakeshore, go fishing and take a lake cruise with a visit to waterfalls in the National Park.
If you are an adventurous person, you can go rafting, catamaranning and kayaking on the Katun river, one of the five most popular rafting rivers alongside with the Zambezi and the Colorado rivers. Altai also offers visitors the deepest cave of Siberia - the Ecologicheskaya cave (340 m deep and about 2000 m long) where in the huge grottos you can see monumental and stunningly beautiful stalactites and stalagmites. The Altaiskaya cave (240 m deep and 2500 long) with its 3-5 m stalactites and stalagmites boasts a lake with calcium flowers and cave pearls. The highlight of any tour is the visit to the 'underground town'. In most of the caves you will see the traces of human settlements dating back to different periods in the history of civilisation.
The rivers and lakes abound in fish and it is almost impossible not to catch one. It is only in Altai and Siberia where you can find taimen' ('river tiger') and lenok. You can also visit a native village, see shaman ritual dance and try Altai national cuisine.
We can offer you accommodation in the Altai West Spa Hotel, located in the valley of the picturesque Belokurikha river, which is considered to be one of the best resorts in Russia due to its healing springs, gorgeous landscape and favorable climate. There are twice as many aerons in the mountain air in Belokurikha as in Davos in Switzerland. Radon thermal springs (27-42C) have been used in medicinal purposes for over a century. The three-kilometer long ski slope attracts a lot of visitors from Russia and abroad and President of Russia Vladimir Putin likes to come here to ski too. As the ski lift operates round the year, it allows everybody to admire the striking beauty of Altai.
